Her hair smells like lily of the valley. I close my eyes and imagine myself in the field of them in spring. The freshness of a new season. The invitation of blue skies and rolling green hills.

I keep my eyes closed to live in the dream just a little bit longer.

But as I blink them open, I see twenty-plus sets of eyes staring at us. Slowly, disbelievingly, she unwraps her arms from me as I unwrap my arms from her.

“Sorry,” she whispers, but I know she saying it to everyone else, not to me.

There is something in her eyes. I see it, even if I’m not sure what “it” is.

She bites her lower lip and I’m melting inside.

I clear my throat. “I want to make it clear that this result is impartial, unbiased, and independent, as my report will detail.”

I look over to the skinny man sitting next to Marty. This must be the one who has been applying all the pressure. He’s wearing a trim and tailored navy blue suit, white shirt, and shiny purple tie. He must be in his sixties, though his flowing shoulder-length dark blond hair makes him look young. He narrows his eyes at me and then snaps his head to Marty.

“My office, six o’clock. This isn’t over.”
